I'm torn on this one. On one hand, it certainly is very cold indeed and colder than it's been for a long time; on the other hand, I'm sure I can remember lots of winters like this as a child - or is that my mind playing tricks? One thing is certain - they didn't close the schools at the drop of a hat when I was a lad. I definitely remember slogging some distance through thick snow and then being allowed to throw snow balls at one another, getting frozen and soaking wet, at break times. We were a hardier breed. "Mrs. Bear! Turn the heating up!"
'Tis true, Bear. Actually, this is the first winter since I moved to the UK that it's been similar to a New England winter.
..and yeah, I do remember trudging through snow and that to get to school. Having said that, though, I do also remember plenty of snow-days off of school, too.
*adopts curmudgeonly old-man voice*: "Why, in my day...we had the great blizzard of 1978..now *that* was a storm..."
